Standard 3-7 Education Methodology

Course Description:

The morning session will include course participants in one classroom to focus on the learning needs of the adult learner in the DA & DH clinical setting. Each course participant will discover that teaching psychomotor skills requires specific attention to individual learning styles for facilitating the progression of clinical skill development in the adult learner. They will learn how to engage students and motivate them to become proficient in their clinical skills by displaying an expertise in instructor student interaction, evaluation, and assessment of learning outcomes. Providing accurate student feedback verbally and in written documentation with a tone that builds confidence are key to providing constructive criticism to students in a way that assures them that the faculty are supportive and invested in student goal achievement. This session will include activities in teaching and learning styles as well as methods of providing written feedback of student clinical performance. DH Methods of Education, Inc. flash drives with electronic documents of course materials will be provided to course participants after they sign copyright agreements.

Learning Outcomes for the Morning Session:

• Define educational concerns for the adult learner
• List the characteristics of adult learners
• Create optimal conditions and environment for adult learning
• Describe methods of teaching according to student learning styles
• Explore methods of engaging and motivating the adult learner
• Discuss assessment and evaluation techniques to motivate adult learners

The afternoon sessionwill have DA and DH course participants in separate sections by discipline. Each section will be presented with an overview of the curriculum for their specific discipline. Planning student clinical learning experiences will be accomplished by reviewing sample syllabi with lab and clinic learning activities, lesson plans, clinic rotations, topic objectives and learning outcomes. The presentation will be focused on methods of planning for student skill development in keeping with evidence based patient centered care. DH educators will review a patient screening form that affords faculty the opportunity to plan the DH on-campus clinic learning to range from simple to more difficult patient care experiences as they progress through the clinical education. Clinical rotation schedules will be shared for discussions on how on-campus and off-campus faculty can calibrate on teaching the students according to the program instructional methods. Faculty calibration exercises will be included in the course activities and discussions.

Learning Outcomes for the DA & DH Afternoon Sessions:

• Describe the content and format of a student learning centered syllabus for each clinic level of DA or DH
• Compare and contrast learning objectives vs. learning outcomes as pertained to clinical experiences
• For DH: Plan the clinical learning experiences through the use of a patient screening system for the progression of skill development for the learner in the on-campus clinical experiences
• Create learning experiences that require students to conduct a critical review of current scientific literature to assess, diagnose, and formulate a treatment plan for patient centered dental hygiene care
• Calibrate with on and off-campus faculty for student consistency in learning
• Plan calibration activities learned in this course for your own faculty

You may open the workshop to other schools who can register directly through our website to offset your school’s costs of the in-service workshop.

The workshop can be changed for just dental hygiene attendees or just dental assisting attendees.

DA & DH Accreditation Workshops at our Summer Camp Amelia Island

Our Workshops are NOT sponsored or provided by Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or its consultants.

DH Methods of Education, Inc. is a private corporation that employs faculty members and former CODA accreditation managers and site team visitors who provide these courses to assist you with preparation of your self-study document and your site visit. There will be separate workshops for Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene disciplines in the Summer Camp 2023 on Amelia Island, FL.

Our workshops provide each attendee with a flash drive containing an EXTENSIVE amount electronic documents which serve as templates for exhibits and materials to include in your self-study documents. Everything you need to write a self-study document is laid out for you in the workshop and on the flash drive.

Course Presenter(s): Christine Dominick, CDA, RDH, MS is the lead presenter for Dental Assisting Accreditation Workshop and also the separate DH Accreditation Workshop. We will provide a 2023 self-study document and exhibits on the flash drives of both DA & DH workshops this year.

The morning session of the workshop is designed to assist educators with the accreditation process, and it provides detailed instructions on demonstrating compliance with accreditation Standards 1 through 2. An emphasis is placed on the standards that are most frequently cited. Updates and changes in the revised standards are compared with previous accreditation standards to assist attendees in providing what is now expected from revised standards.

The first set of exhibits contains an outcomes assessment matrix, outcomes assessment tools, and visual presentations of program findings and performances for immediate analysis. Information on the curriculum, including the Curriculum Management Plan and all aspects of these standards, including the clinical education, are addressed in this course. Electronic exhibits provide supportive documentation for the clinical education portions of Standard 2. At the completion of the morning session of the workshop the participants will be able to:

• Define accreditation Standards 1 through 2, and methods for demonstrating program compliance with each standard.
• Describe the requirements for conducting outcomes assessments and analyzing them for program changes.
• Describe the curriculum requirements and an effective curriculum management plan.
• Describe the CODA standards for the dental hygiene and/or dental assisting clinical education.
• Utilize electronic exhibits provided and edit them for individual program use.
• Utilize strategies for delegating portions of Standards to various faculty members.

The afternoon session of the workshop is designed to assist educators with the entire accreditation process, and it provides detailed instructions on demonstrating compliance with accreditation Standards 3 through 6. An emphasis is placed on the standards that are most frequently cited. Updates and changes in the standards are compared with previous accreditation standards to assist attendees in providing what is now expected from the standards. This afternoon session includes electronic documents which serve as templates for exhibits that can serve as supportive documentation in self-study documents. The electronic documents include a Radiation Safety Plan, Exposure Control Plan, Medical Emergency Plan, and Quality Assurance Plan.

Finally, this workshop provides a step by step guide to organizing and preparing your self-study document. The Do’s and Don’ts of the site visit will be clearly explained to the attendees.
